Contemporary Chinese dining experience blending tradition and innovation in NYC's Hudson Yards.

Challenge

This renovation project required thoughtfully integrating new design elements with the existing restaurant infrastructure in Hudson Yards. The scope encompassed transforming the entrance area, creating a dedicated reception and waiting space, reimagining the entire bar section, and designing three private dining rooms—all while maintaining operational continuity and establishing a cohesive identity that honors both traditional and innovative aspects of the cuisine.

Opportunity

The project presented an opportunity to create an architectural expression that mirrors Chi's culinary philosophy of blending traditional recipes with international techniques. By designing spaces that feel both familiar and fresh, we developed an environment that supports the restaurant's unique offering. The bar area, showcased in the rendering, exemplifies this approach with its warm wood tones, elegant waterfall feature, patterned tile flooring, and traditional architectural motifs framing contemporary dining spaces.

Outcome

The completed design creates a sophisticated atmosphere that enhances the dining experience while maintaining flexibility for future adaptations. The bar area features custom shelving with integrated lighting for bottle display, complemented by a waterfall feature that adds movement and texture. Traditional Chinese architectural elements like the arched doorway and delicate mountain motifs on wall panels provide cultural context, while contemporary furniture and finishes ensure modern comfort. The pattern-rich flooring anchors the space while transitioning smoothly between dining and bar areas, creating a unified yet distinctive environment that complements Chi's innovative culinary approach.
