A comprehensive renovation transforming a classic Old Westbury residence into a contemporary family home that creates seamless connections between interior spaces and the surrounding garden landscape.

Challenge

The project required reimagining both interior and exterior spaces to accommodate an expanding family while introducing modern aesthetics that wouldn't compromise the home's character. Creating a cohesive design language throughout multiple spaces—including personalized children's rooms and flexible common areas—demanded thoughtful material selection and spatial planning to support varied daily activities for a family of five.

Opportunity

The renovation presented the chance to establish a meaningful dialogue between the home and its garden setting through strategic placement of large windows and thresholds. By emphasizing natural materials—wood, marble, stone, and brass—we developed a warm, minimal material palette that references the surrounding landscape. This approach allowed us to create distinct yet harmonious zones throughout the home, including a dual-purpose living room with both social gathering space and an intimate fireside setting.

Outcome

The completed residence successfully balances sophisticated design with practical family functionality. Each child's room features subtle design elements that reflect their individual personalities while maintaining design coherence. The living spaces flow naturally between indoor and outdoor environments, creating what feels like "a house within a garden, and gardens within a house." As head designer managing the entire process from concept through construction administration, we delivered a home that exceeds the family's expectations—combining elegant materials, thoughtful spatial planning, and custom millwork to create a residence that's both visually striking and perfectly tailored to its occupants' lifestyle.
